While the rest of Columbia huddles indoors, Columbia resident Chad Slate heads out to help residents in need of a tow. Slate, who owns his own towing company called I-70 Towing and Recovery, services mid-Missouri 24 hours a day. Slate started towing cars when he was 16 years old, over two decades ago. He said he enjoys the strategy that recovering a vehicle can demand. "It can be a puzzle sometimes," he said. "I enjoy that because it's challenging."

The Making of: The Art of the Tow

This short was made in conjunction with Columbia Missourian photojournalist Danielle Pycior, who rode along with Chris Slate during a record breaking cold snap. We wanted to capture the skill and nuance of extracting stuck cars from the snow. In addition to the video which showed on the Missourian's website, stills from the video were packaged into photographs for the print edition of the Missourian.
